The term Hōlona (Beginner) here will mean someone who has never entered an oli competition, or has shared their oli in a public setting only a few times, or has recently learned the oli. On the other hand, Ma‘a (Experienced) here will mean someone who has entered at least one oli competition, or has shared their oli in a public setting many times, or has practiced the oli for many years.

The focus here should not be on any award, but on the opportunity to share your gift and skill of the oli with the community and thereby do your part to preserve and perpetuate the Hawaiian culture. Sharing your oli at the Hō‘ike Oli will also give you the opportunity to be critiqued (in private) by expert judges who will give you mana‘o on how you can be a more accomplished oli practitioner.

Presenters of the Hō‘ike Oli reserve the right to adjust award amounts and or to cancel a division due to lack of participation.
